Despite Florida’s equivalent of winter weather (“jacket weather”) the heat was on at Palm Beach International Raceway as the cars from Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) took to the track to begin the 2013 season. Overcast skies on Friday cleared to sunshine by Sunday, but the competitors put on a show all weekend. As we have come to expect at an HSR event, there was a diversity of cars, sure to pique the interest of race fans regardless of your personal interests.
Vintage racers were represented by such gems as a 1949 Jaguar XK 120, a Datsun 510 and a 240z, Porsche 914s and early 911s, a BMW 2002, a 1966 Porsche 910, Lotus sports racers, a BMW 507, a Superperformance Ford GT 40, and an amazing silver 1959 Porsche RSK. IMSA GTP cars, such as a 1985 Porsche Fabcar, were also on hand. It is always a thrill to see these great cars in action, and admire the owners who maintain them in race trim and put on a great show.
More modern classics were much in evidence as Porsche RSRs and Caymans, as well as Corvettes, Mustangs, Vipers and a Ferrari 430 provided some spirited racing, especially during Sunday’s Louis Chevrolet Enduro. The enduro was more of a long sprint race, as none of the drivers seemed to be holding back.
On Saturday and Sunday “charity rides” were available in which fans could make a donation to the local Boys and Girls clubs and then be driven around the track in one of several race and high performance street cars. It is a neat way to raise money for a worthy cause and give some lucky fans a taste of what racing is all about. As always Hats Off to the wonderful folks at HSR for staging a great show for us race fans. All in all, it was a very pleasant (but cool) weekend for all who attended. Be sure to check the HSR website for the schedule of races this year. Make you plans now to attend at least one HSR event. I’m sure that you will enjoy it as much as we do!
