Story and photographs by Pete Taylor
The Vintage Sports Car Club Speed Championship consists of a number of events where competitors run, against the clock, in Sprints or Hill-Climbs; the series is deigned to create a level playing-field across a sixteen-class structure for Edwardian, Vintage and Post-Vintage racing and sports-cars. To say that the range of entries (and entrants) is diverse would be something of an understatement.
The event reported on here was on a road thro’ the deer park at Loton Park in Shropshire, ancestral home to the Leighton family who have been in residence for over 300 years. Loton Park is a splendid 17th-century country mansion, currently home to the 11th Baronet, Sir Michael and his wife Lady Leighton. The house stands in magnificent gardens in the grounds of the ruined Loton Castle, built in 1340. The cars involvend in the event were not quite that old but the earliest one entered was built in 1903.
As usual, in the attached photographs I’ve tried to bring you shots of things that you might not see every day in the USA (or anywhere else!) although several of the machines were originally created on the Western side of the Altantic Ocean.
The VSCC has held events at Loton since 1992 but the course dates back to 1960 and was extended to its present length of 1475 yards (1349 metres) some years ago; it has an average gradient of 1 in 7 (14%) and is steepest at 1 in 4 (25%), it is not all uphill, however and there is quite a downhill section part-way up the hill.
Many of the cars shown here also compete in VSCC circuit races; it’s often a rather worrying sight, seeing twenty of these mad things coming at you into the first turn!
Unfortunately I’m not able to point you towards a full entry list, or set of results but they should appear, in the fullness of time, on the excellent VSCC website: http://www.vscc.co.uk/
Hopefully you will enjoy the photos; as always, if you have any questions, please get in touch via my website, www.petetaylor.org.uk and I’ll try to explain the unexplainable!
